Berat Zulbehari: I had the opportunity to immerse myself in a unique artistic environment

1. Dear Berat Zulbehari, you/we have just returned from the DFEWA residency at Mallnitz in Austria. Please tell us more about your involvement in this residency. What made you join this residency and how would you describe the whole experience now that it's over?

Berat Zulbehari: My Involvement in the Residency: During my time at the DFEWA residency in Mallnitz, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in a unique artistic environment. I was drawn to this residency because of its reputation for fostering creativity in a beautiful natural setting. My experience was truly transformative, as I had the chance to collaborate with other talented artists and draw inspiration from the stunning Austrian landscape. The residency allowed me to focus entirely on my artistic practice, free from the usual distractions of daily life.

2.What is the present role of artist residencies in the contemporary art ecosystem?

Berat Zulbehari: Role of Artist Residencies in Contemporary Art: Artist residencies like DFEWA play a pivotal role in the contemporary art ecosystem. They serve as incubators for creativity, offering artists the time and space to experiment, explore new ideas, and develop their craft. Residencies also facilitate cross-cultural exchange and collaboration, enriching the global art community. In today's fast-paced world, where distractions abound, these retreats provide a vital space for deep artistic exploration.

3. How do artist residencies meet the changing needs of individual artists?

Berat Zulbehari: Meeting Changing Needs of Artists: Artist residencies are adapting to the evolving needs of artists. They offer a diverse range of programs and resources to cater to individual artists' requirements. Some provide access to cutting-edge technology and facilities, while others focus on nurturing traditional art forms. Residencies also address the need for financial support, mentorship, and networking, empowering artists to thrive in a dynamic art landscape.

4. How can residencies provide alternative openings and infrastructures to nurture artistic work in the midst of current societal transformations and environmental crisis?

Berat Zulbehari: Supporting Artistic Work Amidst Transformation: Residencies have a unique role to play in the face of societal transformations and environmental crises. They can serve as hubs for artists to engage with these pressing issues through their work. Additionally, some residencies prioritize sustainable practices, encouraging artists to consider their environmental footprint and contribute to a more eco-conscious art community.

5. The practices and models of residencies are focused on cultural and societal development, rather than on that of the artists' careers. They are forging new connections and pathways between various regimes of society. As in the case of ecological biodiversity, it is today necessary to resist the homogenization of intellectual, aesthetic, and cultural knowledge. Are residencies reinforcing the process of cultural homogenization, or are they supporting cultural diversity?

Berat Zulbehari:  Cultural Diversity vs. Homogenization: Residencies, when designed thoughtfully, can contribute to cultural diversity. By bringing together artists from various backgrounds and promoting inclusivity, they foster a rich tapestry of artistic perspectives. However, it's crucial for residencies to actively seek out and support underrepresented voices, ensuring that diversity is not merely superficial but runs deep within the fabric of the program.
