What made you join this residency and how would you describe the whole experience now that it's over? Berat Zulbehari: My Involvement in the Residency: During my time at the DFEWA residency in Mallnitz, I had the opportunity to immerse myself in a unique artistic environment. I was drawn to this residency because of its reputation for fostering creativity in a beautiful natural setting. My experience was truly transformative, as I had the chance to collaborate with other talented artists and draw inspiration from the stunning Austrian landscape. The residency allowed me to focus entirely on my artistic practice, free from the usual distractions of daily life.   2.What is the present role of artist residencies in the contemporary art ecosystem? Krisztina Soós: It was a deeply cross-cultural experience for me

Imagine
1.                  Dear Krisztina Soós, you/we have just returned from the DFEWA residency at Mallnitz in Austria. Please tell us more about your involvement in this residency. What made you join this residency and how would you describe the whole experience now that it's over? Krisztina Soós: I had known Dorothea Fleiss, the organiser of the DFEWA residency, from another residency, so she was familiar with my work. When she invited me to Mallnitz for DFEWA, I was very excited – and not just because I love Carinthia (the region in which Mallnitz is located). Seriously, though, I am always happy to meet creative and original people - especially artists. So, I was delighted to see that for this residency, artists from seven different countries had signed up. The reception upon arrival was very friendly, with some welcome drinks. Some of the participating artists have known each other years, others were m...

Arta Rushiti: I got the chance to gain new friends, new connections, colleagues, conceptualists and new collaboration

Imagine
 1. Dear Arta Rushiti, you/we have just returned from the DFEWA residency at Mallnitz in Austria. Please tell us more about your involvement in this residency. What made you join this residency and how would you describe the whole experience now that it's over? Arta Rushiti : Being invited among many artists from different countries, especially Austria was such a special honor for me. Regarding the fact that Kosovo is still a new country in transition and developing, I also was the youngest participant in this artistic organization. I had a very warm welcoming, respect and appreciation from Dorothea Fleiss whom was brilliant, especially her artistic presentation which was extremely important. From this incredible experience I got the chance to gain new friends, new connections, colleagues, conceptualists and new collaborations. 2.     What is the present role of artist residencies in the contemporary art ecosystem? Arta Rushiti: Every kind and any type of art is im...

Eris Bushati: DFEWA residence in Mallnitz was for sure a big good surprise for me

Imagine
1.      Dear Eris Bushati, you/we have just returned from the DFEWA residency at Mallnitz in Austria. Please tell us more about your involvement in this residency. What made you join it and how would you describe the whole experience now that it's over?   Eris Bushati: Ohhh, I can’t start my answer without a sigh because I am not sure if I can fully articulate verbally this experience. I have joined this art residency through the invitation of the curator of this organization, an outstanding painter Dorothea Fleiss that I was lucky enough to meet in another art residency that I was coordinating in Albania. Having had a lot of experience on these activities doesn’t stop me from admitting that DFEWA residence in Mallnitz was for sure a big good surprise for me. The intercultural and interpersonal exchange was above and beyond the artistic exchange that art residencies aim to succeed. It was a week full of discovering I might say. Discovering new artists, n...

Anne Plaisance: Residencies can be bridges made of patchworks

Imagine
1 .  Dear Anne Plaisance, you/we have just returned from the DFEWA residency at Mallnitz in Austria. Please tell us more about your involvement in this residency. What made you join it and how would you describe the whole experience now that it's over? Anne Plaisance: I joined it after being invited by Dora, who I met in 2022 during the International Transcultural Exchange conference in Boston. I was intrigued by the venue and the artists she invited.  The whole experience was amazing: the artists, the warm welcome by Dora and Elisabeth, the fascinating conversations with artists from all over the world, the visits around Mallnitz, the opportunity for personal and artistic growth, the spontaneous joy and life celebration that we all shared, the unexpected bursts of music and connivence, the opportunity to see the immense talent of others.  We were all so different, but so mysteriously deeply connected that it felt unreal, almost magic. 2. What is the present role...

Sabbah Lyad: ... I did not imagine the extent of the beauty of the place and the wonderful nature

Imagine
1.       Dear Sabbah Lyad, you/we have just returned from the DFEWA residency at Mallnitz in Austria. Please tell us more about your involvement in this residency. What made you join this residency and how would you describe the whole experience now that it's over? Sabbah Lyad : I was invited to participate in Conan by the organizers of the symposium to present a sculptural work made of wood. I was fascinated by this place through what I saw on the Internet, but when I arrived, I did not imagine the extent of the beauty of the place and the wonderful nature. This area is imaginative and allows artists to revive their imagination and feelings.   2.   What is the present role of artist residencies in the contemporary art ecosystem? Sabbah Lyad: I believe that the artist is a true link between places and is a messenger of beauty who is able to extract beauty and transmit it to the largest number of people. Therefore, you find artistic residencies ...

The story of the art residency in Mallnitz

Imagine
F irst day – First contact The art residency in Mallnitz in the Spittal an der Drau District in Carinthia, Austria, organized by  Association  d. fleiss & east west artist e.V. Dresden  and Pro Arte Kunstverein Mallnitz was already known for a certain ethos: it offered the artists work spaces for research and experimenting, it encouraged creative encounters in order to create new contacts, either with other artists, or with a specific environment. Opening and access for all artists, of all nationalities, were also a fundamental postulates for DFEWA. From the beginning, the residency organized by Dorothea Fleiss aimed to facilitate exchanges between East and West, to create poles between the two art markets, to facilitate encounters and even confrontations of ideas between the artists. One can imagine the residencies in Mallnitz like arenas where “artistic fights” took place between artists, not between gladiators. In order to have a successful career, artists should...
